New tabs are not an end in itself, is a means to reach the content they need. This is the view that Mozilla Labs has addressed when designing a new way, smarter and more efficient to replace the current blank tab every time we open a new page.
course this is nothing new. Opera is probably the first browser to do something more efficiently with the new tab, thanks to the Speed \u200b\u200bDial feature, which adds new links (default) defined by the user, every time you open a new empty tab, making it easier for users to find their most visited sites.
Google Chrome took a more proactive approach, including the most visited sites, as well as recently closed tabs.
And since last year, the idea has been floating around Mozilla, with attempts as AutoDial Ed Lee (most visited) or Ambient News Atul Varma (to the nearest web-like thread), and Aza Raskin video with the concept of new tab ( contextual search and sequences).
about: tab is a new extension for Firefox, developed by Dan Mills, which brings together all these concepts, offering a very clean interface with links to the most frequently visited web pages, wireless sites, contextual search, and an option to restore recently closed tabs, also following three principles: no configuration, clean and dynamic.
Although I could not make it work at all (I found the option to restore a closed tab, or a link to search selected text), and persisted in suggesting pages that I swear I did not visit so often, this extension is an approach that I think is correct.
And it could be much better if it was designed as an extensible plug, which could add content and recent Tweets, web mail, weather reports, and other small pieces of information that may be helpful for the user to obtain content desired.
about: tab requires Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 or higher. Catch Mozilla Labs in .
